Meet the Instructors
Jay Childress was born in Roanoke, Virginia. He is the co-founder of the Roanoke Valley Driver Training School along with his wife, Nancy. Jay has taught for Roanoke City Public Schools for 32 years. He has been a physical education teacher and baseball coach at James Madison Middle School for the past 26 years. He has also coached basketball and football and currently serves as the school's athletic coordinator. In addition to his duties as a public school teacher, Jay has 28 years of experience as a driving instructor.
Jay received his Bachelor's degree in Physical Education from Radford University. He holds a Masters degree in Elementary Administration, also from Radford University.
Jay lives in Vinton, Virginia with his wife Nancy, and they have two sons.
Lyle McLaren is from Washington, D.C. A teacher for 32 years, Lyle began his teaching career in Montgomery County. He just began his 27th year at Andrew Lewis Middle School in Salem, teaching eighth grade English. While in the Salem School system, Lyle has coached football, basketball and softball. Lyle has been with Roanoke Valley Driver Training School for 14 years.
Lyle received his BA degree in Elementary Education from Virginia Tech. He holds a Masters degree in Elementary Education Administration from Radford University.
Lyle lives in Salem with his wife Teresa, and they have two daughters.
Edgar Moser was born and raised in Giles County and has been teaching for 30 years. He has taught in Montgomery County, Roanoke County and at Roanoke Valley Christian School and has coached football, basketball, baseball and tennis. Edgar is in his 10th year teaching driver's education at Salem High School and he sponsors the Lookin' Out Club, a safe driving club for Salem students. He was voted the Virginia Association of Driver Education and Traffic Safety Teacher of the Year in 2005. Edgar has 15 years of experience teaching driver's education and has been with Roanoke Valley Driver Training School for 9 years.
Edgar received his BS degree in Business Education from Radford University. He also holds a Masters degree in Educational Leadership from Radford University and is currently working on a second Masters at Liberty University in Church Planting and Evangelism.
Edgar lives in Roanoke with his wife Ginny, and they have one son.
Bob Sandy is from Mullens, West Virginia. He is a retired public school teacher, teaching 31 years at William Fleming, Salem, and Auburn High Schools. Bob has a wide background in coaching, including football and track. Bob has 23 years of experience as a driving instructor in public school systems and an additional 3 years of experience with the Roanoke Valley Driver Training School.
Bob received his BS in Biology from Concord College, where he played football, basketball and ran track. He holds Masters degrees in Secondary School Administration and School Counseling from Radford University.
Bob lives in Salem with his wife, Marylane. They have three children and six grandchildren.
Jerry Scharnus grew up in Easton, Maryland and served in the Army for 2 years. A teacher for 34 years, he has taught Health and Physical Education at James River and Patrick Henry High Schools, and this is his 26th year teaching at Salem High School. Jerry is a Salem football coach, helping lead the Spartans to 6 state championships. Jerry has been teaching driver's education for 34 years and he's been with Roanoke Valley Driver Training School for 22 years.
Jerry received his BS degree in Health and Physical Education from Virginia Tech. He played football for Tech for 3 years, being voted the MVP-defensive player in 1972.
Jerry lives in Salem with his wife Diana. They have five children and three grandchildren.
